The secure protection of radioactive sources strong enough to cause serious radiological harm must be upgraded, as such material could be used by terrorists to create a 'dirty bomb'.
In the wake of last May's arrest of suspected 'dirty bomb' plotter and alleged Al Qaeda sympathiser Abdullah al-Muhajir in New York, the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) latest statement reads: "The type of radioactive materials needed to build a 'dirty bomb' can be found in almost any country in the world. Many countries may have inadequate control and monitoring programs to prevent or even detect the theft of these materials."
