Danish engineering company Ramboll has bought Whitbybird in a move that will create an international consultancy with more than 6000 staff.

The combined company will have a turnover of about £140 million and offices in Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, the Middle East and India.

Ramboll paid Whitbybird shareholders an undisclosed sum for the company and the UK arm will now be branded Ramboll Whitbybird.

Mark Whitby, founder and chair of the engineer, will become chairman of Ramboll Whitbybird. Chief executive Mike Crane retains his post.
