How encouraging to see the ECA respond, and with such force (‘Coloured judgement’ and ‘Living in harmony’, EMC, September, p5)! Although it might seem to the outside world that they protest too much…?
Roger Lovegrove states that I am out of touch with member’s opinions. I can only base my observations on the members who have made their opinions known locally. I can assure the smug Mr Lovegrove that they were all 100% against the harmonisation. There was no raising of the subject by regional managers at branch level and the only circular we could ever find mentioned the proposed harmonisation but stated that “members need take no action at this time”.
However, it’s all water under the bridge now, as the purpose of my letters has been fulfilled – public debate and discussion. What a pity that the ECA didn’t respond so forcefully beforehand! Perhaps in future any such important issues can be raised well in advance of a decision being made.
