Your organisation's risk of serious fire can be reduced by a remarkable 85%. So suggests Colin Todd, the author of this new guide to fire safety management. The guide is titled Fire Precautions: A Guide for Management and it is the author's belief that, successfully installed, the measures outlined in this book could help eliminate 85% of all non-domestic fires.

Written with the non-fire specialist in mind the book covers the complete subject of fire safety in a comprehensive manner and an easy-to-absorb style.

The book has 22 chapters that include; the nature and causes of fire, fire risk assessment, fire precautions and prevention, means of escape, fire safety and signs and lighting, detection and alarm systems, fire extinguishing appliances and systems, inspections, testing and maintenance, training procedure and drills.

Diagrams, charts and graphs are included within the chapters to aid explanation and understanding but the real success of this book is down to two particular achievements of Todd.

The first of these achievements is to have avoided the 'correct in detail but dull' syndrome common to many technical books. The author has managed this feat by including within the text real life examples and anecdotes as experienced during his career.

A career which began in 1975 with an MSc degree in fire safety engineering, followed by appointments in industry, fire approvals, fire assurance and, latterly, his own consultancy. This background has provided Todd with both expertise and confidence enough to also include into the text his personal opinions and beliefs about fire safety issues.
