Buildings could be damaging the environment and wasting millions of pounds in the energy used in heating and cooling systems because of leaking refrigerant from air conditioning units.
New research by energy specialist EA Technology has shown that as refrigerant charge levels fall to around 50% in split air conditioning and heat pump systems, operating efficiency plummets by as much as 40%.

"Leaks are common in these types of system because of the amount of pipework involved, poor installation and deterioration," said EA's Robert Davis.

EA is developing systems to alert users to leakage problems. More details on www.eatechnology.com.
