Reliance Security Task Management has signed the first-ever PFI contract between a private security firm and a police authority.
The contract – worth £90 million over three decades – involves the management of all custody-related services, forensic medical support and prisoner identification parades on behalf of the Sussex Police Force.
As the lead party in this new 'consortium', Reliance is set to provide support to Sussex's six existing custody centres, and will manage the transfer of all civilian staff involved that are currently employed by Sussex Police.
Due to start in July 2002, the main contract involves Reliance in the design, building and operation of four new state-of-the-art control centres for the Sussex force, to be located in Brighton, Chichester, Eastbourne and Worthing.
Reliance will also be providing a fully-integrated electronic security package to the buildings, incorporating digital CCTV.
