Returning the empties: Midland Area Housing Association is refurbishing empty homes to sell to families in Birmingham. Wahidur Rahman – pictured with his children Mohammed (3, far left) and Khalilur (7, second from right), their cousins and Irène Lathbury, director of operations at Midland Area – bought this home in Handsworth under the scheme. So far, Midland Area has renovated 11 homes in the city’s market renewal pathfinder zone. The homes can only be sold to local people because of a covenant in the deeds to prevent them being bought by investors.
