Ridgehill Housing Association chief executive Lily Smith has died aged 48 after a heart attack at the weekend.
She had been appointed to the top post in July after five years as housing services director. Her promotion marked the end of seven months' Housing Corporation supervision, imposed after concerns about corporate governance.
Ridgehill chair Hattie Llewelyn-Davies paid tribute to Smith's "extraordinary energy and determination" and said: "In the nine months she was in the job, we've made major progress.
"Our performance indicators on housing management are all excellent. That's evidence of Lily's determination and abilities."
Julian Ashby, managing director of Hacas Chapman Hendy and last year's interim chief executive, has been asked to resume the role.
A board meeting in April will discuss the way forward.
