Roads to ruin: A comprehensive investment programme is needed to avoid a "spiral of decline" in Britain's 22 new towns, the DTLR has warned. A select committee report said many of the new towns, which include Milton Keynes, had been built with an overemphasis on roads and cars, and would need redevelopment. The study found high areas of deprivation with high levels of housing need in the towns, built between the 1940s and 1970s as models for 20th-century living.
