Barbara Roche was named minister for homelessness by deputy prime minister John Prescott as Housing Today went to press on Tuesday.
Social exclusion and the work of the neighbourhood renewal unit will also be Roche’s responsibility and she will continue as deputy minister for women.

Charity Shelter welcomed the appointment, saying: “This recognises that homelessness is not just a housing problem.”
