I was interested to read that while Richmond council says it has halved the number of people reported as homeless, it still has too many families in temporary housing according to the charity Shelter (4 March, page 12).
Perhaps it should address the thorny issue of under-occupation – where one person is living in a three-bedroom house, for example. Social housing landlords should be allowed to offer a substantial cash incentive to encourage these lone occupants to move into a more suitable property, thus making way for a family to be housed.
Maybe if families had adequate housing and a little privacy fewer family units would break up.
