The Construction Confederation and the Association for Project Safety (Formerly the Association of Planning Supervisors) have joined forces to promote health and safety risk management.

The CC and APS plan to use their combined resources to influence clients to adopt consistent standards in procurement, influence designers to manage risk and influence material suppliers to reduce risk at source.

The two will also create a CDM “performance standards committee” to write a framework of performance standards to coincide with the arrival of the revised CDM regulations in 2006.

The partnership will also develop business opportunities for members who wish to undertake coordinator or principal contractor roles.

“There is a real opportunity here for us to present a unified package to construction clients that reflects best practice among constructors and ensures that planning supervisors are properly supported throughout the project,” said Stephen Ratcliffe, chief executive of the CC. “I am confident the new understanding will prevent the poor communication and occasional conflict that has arisen between planning supervisors and principal contractors in the past.”

The Association for Project Safety represents planning supervisors and has over 5,000 members.
