Our poor friends in the North
Facilities managers in the North are the poor relations when it comes to salaries, says the latest salary survey by Facilities Recruitment.

The survey reveals that northern facilities managers earn an average of £5,000 less than their London counterparts, who command a typical salary of £35,542.

They also lose out to facilities managers in the Midlands, who earn around £34,600 — about £4,000 more than they are paid.

Benefits such as company cars, pensions and healthcare are received by more than half of the respondents in this category, adding an extra £3,000 to their salaries.

There is little difference between the earning power of in-house facilities managers – who earn £31,072 — and those employed by service suppliers, who earn £30,861.

Facilities professionals who work for consulting firms earn the most in the sector, with average salaries of £35,000.

The north/south divide closes as facilities managers are promoted. Northern facilities directors earn an average salary of £73,000, faring better than their Midlands counterparts, who earn £62,500, and their south-eastern cousins, who earn £68,000.

London-based facilities directors receive the highest remuneration of all at £80,000.

Benefits boost the average salary of facilities directors by around £8,000 and all respondents in this category said they received them.

The survey, which was based on 350 responses, also reveals that the typical salary of an assistant facilities manager is £21,219, while senior facilities managers earn £40,952, operations managers earn £38,450 and operations directors earn £55,940.
