A working panel, led by the Engineering Council aims to 'radically update' the Standards and Routes to Registration (SARTOR) requirements for introduction in 2003.
SARTOR last saw a review in 1997 and the current move is in response to demands from employers and the profession.

The panel intends to increase the emphasis on assessing competence based on the skills and knowledge of the graduate. This would reduce focus on entry level requirements for further and higher education programmes. The panel will also compare qualifications at an international level.

There will be a milestone meeting of key figures from industry and academia on 16 December, where progress on the SARTOR review will be under discussion.

The Engineering Council is also working with the Engineering Technology Board on introduction of a Chartered Technologist qualification.
