Competition officials have recommended that the European Commission block the merger between Schneider and Legrand.
Schneider has virtually completed the takeover of its rival after a gruelling nine-month process. Schneider has already had to revise its original offer following action from Legrand's preference shareholders.
The two companies now face the threat of demerger after EU states backed the view of competition officials that the deal should be blocked on anti-trust grounds.
