General management rather than specialist IT and security departments should be afforded direct responsibility for securing company computers, Internet connections and telecomms.
That’s the view of the Paris-based Business Federation, espoused at a recent conference organised by the International Chamber of Commerce, writes Keith Nuthall. The Federation claimed that businesses across Europe desperately need to instil a “culture of security” within their own organisation to better protect themselves against all manner of threats – including terrorism.
To maintain such constant attention across a business would, the Federation stated, involve “moving security away from technical units such that it becomes a direct concern and responsibility of management.” Delegates at the conference (entitled ‘Technology for Security and Safety: Industry’s Role’) heard that general management would be better placed to identify non-IT security problems for which technology may have an answer (with those same management teams calling on specialist help when necessary).
Conference chairman Talal Abu-Ghazaleh suggested that there could be “no excuse for failing to invest in IT for the enhanced protection of life and property”.
