The standard, BS EN 13889, applies to forged steel shackles for general lifting purposes, including Dee and Bow shackles, from 0.5t WLL up to and including 25t WLL.The Charpy Impact Test is an indicator for the performance of the shackles under harsh operating conditions Thanks to manufacturer, Crosby Europe, for notifying CM of this change
A number of standards will enter the market this year. They will apply to lifting and rigging equipment used across the EU. The shackle pin designations affected in this first standard are screw pin type (W) and bolt pin type (X). These types were previously known as (A) and (E) pin shackles.
The new standard covers a number of key criteria - fatigue testing, Charpy Impact Test, traceability on both body and pin, and certification. Fatigue testing determines the ability of the material to withstand repeated applications of load, in this case 20,000 cycles at 1.5 times the working load limit.
