An action plan that would transform the St Vincent’s district of Sheffield and add up to 7000 houses was being considered by the council’s cabinet as Housing Today went to press on Wednesday.

The council has already approved an additional 6000-7000 units in St Vincent’s and a similar number is likely to be given the go-ahead as part of the six-year plan to regenerate the run-down district.

St Vincent’s, on the north-western outskirts of the city, has strong associations with the Irish and Catholic communities in Sheffield but has suffered a slow decline.

Under the action plan, homes would be built to create a sustainable mixed community of students and longer-term residents.

Simon Ogden, major project manager for the council, said: “We are talking about student housing and affordable – but market priced – housing, along with some other more expensive apartments for sale.”

The action plan also proposes the early creation of a St Vincent’s forum, which would include existing and new residents, businesses and voluntary organisations.

Tim Rippon, cabinet member for economic development and planning policy, said: “The city council is working with local people and local businesses to maximise every opportunity that can benefit the area to create a safe, welcoming, thriving environment in St Vincent’s.”
