Don't be put off by the title of this video (Title: Shopping Centre Bomb Threats) as the threats, principles and practice as described, in this professionally produced film, apply equally well to any large department store or facility to which the public have access. With an introduction by the former Director General of MI5 Dame Stella Rimington DCB, the calibre of the information contained within the video is self evident.
The content of the video is based upon the three key elements of Prevention and Planning, Managing Threats and Business Continuity. Also covered are issues such as: Health and Safety, training, communications, telephone threats, incendiary devices, search procedures, evacuation, explosion effects and media management.
The film uses the 1996 Manchester City Centre bombing incident as a case study which includes video footage taken during and after the event and an enlightening interview with Jackie Moores, the centre manager at the time.
The primary purpose of the video is to provide an introductory planning tool upon the subject of bomb threats and it accomplishes this task clearly and satisfactorily.
The film would also make ideal supporting material for a presentation highlighting the needs and requirements for counter-terrorism precautions.
Personally, I intend to include sections, or if time permits all of the film as part of my staff security awareness training programme.
