The Health and Safety Executive has announced a 59% jump in site deaths, prompting the Government to call for urgent talks on safety.
The HSE recorded 62 deaths on-site from April to September this year, up from 46 in the preceeding six months and 39 for April-September last year.
Construction ministers Nick Raynsford and Beverley Hughes have called for urgent meetings following the report. These will form the agenda for a health and safety summit hosted by the DETR. It is expected to take place next February.
The HSE has published its first ever enforcement report, which names hundreds of companies, organisations and individuals convicted of health and safety crimes during 1999/2000.
The report lists around 1600 offenders, with full details on www.hse-databases.co.uk. The list includes many big name companies.
