The CIBSE CHP Group will be running a series of site visits, funded by the Carbon Trust to showcase CHP in action and enable potential purchasers of the technology to have their questions answered and their doubts allayed.

Visits will take place in Edinburgh, London, Southampton, Wales and Woking and will include higher education, museums, hotels and local authority buildings.

Aimed at those who are able to influence decisions on purchasing this type of equipment within their organisation, the event will be open to people responsible for facilities management, energy management and purchasing, as well as those involved in implementing sustainability and climate change programmes.

The visits will include presentations by an expert on CHP who will provide an overview of the benefits of CHP and outline why it is a technology worth incorporating into your building. A manufacturer’s representative will also provide information on how to assess what kind of equipment is necessary for different buildings, for different uses and how easy the equipment is to implement.

A question and answer session will allow visitors to address the issues they face and the difficulties posed in implementing the technology. This will be followed by a tour of the CHP plant, enabling visitors to see how the plant can be incorporated into buildings and how the host organisations have integrated it into their buildings’ operation.

An initial event will be held on 6 September at Edinburgh University, starting off with an informal lunch to allow people to meet others interested in CHP technology and share opinions on its implementation.

Sessions entitled ‘Combined Heat and Power Makes Sense’ and ‘What Are We Waiting For?’ provide context, while further information on the University’s use of CHP will be provided by the energy and sustainability manager and the engineering operations manager. The day will finish with a visit to the nearby energy centre.

The official launch event takes place on 27 September at the Science Museum, while future events are planned for 18 October in Southampton and 7 November at the Neville Hospital, Wales.
