Investment is needed now if a skills shortage catastrophe is to be averted in the air conditioning sector.
While adequate training is provided for large refrigerated systems, the unitary and split system air conditioning sector remains largely unregulated. The warning was given by David Tipler, managing director, of LG Air Conditioning: “The fact is, you don’t have to be qualified to install a split system. The splits sector largely goes unregulated, with no mandatory installer registration scheme.” He acknowledges the work of industry bodies, but accuses companies of paying lip service to the idea of investment in training. “We would welcome some form of legislation which specifies the minimum standards for installing air conditioning units,” said Tipler.
The Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Industry Board was unavailable to comment on the matter.
