QS News has had much to report on since its launch in April. We look at four stories that got your tounges wagging
May: Measurement was an issue that certainly got our readers exercised, or their minds at least. The “hip rafter” debate sparked by our “Do you know your basics?” quiz, with readers offering two separate solutions, has become the stuff of legend.
June: RICS construction faculty chairman Launce Morgan sensationally turned up at our offices ready to go public with an exclusive damning attack on the RICS. His claims that the management of the institution was “shrouded in Victorianism” and “arrogant and undemocratic” drew both fire from the RICS and support from many of our readers. His replacement, Michael Byng, also encountered drama of his own after being charged with misconduct by the institution last month.
July: There was hope, tension, amazement and then euphoria when we won the bid to host the 2012 Olympics. Fast forward to winter and there’s bickering, with many QSs warning the building programme will be behind schedule and over budget. We look forward to finding out which firms the ODA will be hiring for the biggest contracts. Ah, except the announcement on those has been delayed...
August: In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, QSs shook off their safe, brick-counting image to emerge as heroes of the hour. Firms such as Faithful & Gould, Gleeds and Stapleton International were quick to sweep into the Gulf Coast to start on vital damage assessment work.
