The new ACPO Policy, described as the "most significant document ever to hit installation companies" is published this month.
The policy, designed to further reduce false alarms, will mean big changes for installers and it has been both supported and attacked by the readers and writers of Security Installer.

While some are unhappy with the demands for confirmation technology, others see it as a logical and welcome step which will bring added business.

But we believe many installation companies are confused …especially about the details and how the policy will be interpreted by individual forces up and down the country.

Because of this, Security Installer, in partnership with BT RedCare, is organising a series of information forums for readers throughout the UK.

Your chance to ask questions
These forums go under the title of 'ACPO Unscrambled' and aim to do just that. Leading figures from the industry and the police will take readers through the maze. The forums aim to be objective and independent with the overall aim of helping installers get the information they need to work profitably within the new policy.

Information about confirmation technology will be provided by BT RedCare.

These half-day free seminars will give installers a chance to question our panel of experts on the details of the policy. These question and answer sessions will allow installers to take away information vital to their livelihood. Information packs on confirmation technology will also be provided at the end of each session.

We believe that even those readers who disagree with the contents of the policy, are still hungry for information about how to conform to it.

Therefore, confirmation technology, and the options to go about providing it, will be explained and demonstrated in an informative way by BT RedCare.

The British Security Industry Association are also giving their full endorsement to the seminars.

ACPO 2000: What it will mean to you

  • After two false calls police response will be downgraded.
  • After five false calls police response will be withdrawn.
  • After a withdrawal of response, confirmed technology must be fitted before police response is re-instated
  • URNs will be issued by police at a cost of approx £30.
  • From October 1 2001all new installations will need confirmation technology to ensure a police response.
  • Police can use premium rate lines to ARCs instead of an annual line fee.
  • For the first time URNs will be supplied for CCTV monitoring
  • With ‘bells-only’ alarms the police require local intelligence of a crime spree as confirmation.
  • The term “confirmation” can include audio, video and sequential alarms technologies
