The Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) has launched a consultation paper to explore uses for solar powered technology.

The aim is to enable solar-powered households to sell surplus electricity back to energy companies.

The government has promised £10 million to back the use of photovoltaics in the UK, and supports the plans for use of 'smart' meters to divert unused electricity back to the national grid.

Test households in Pickets Lock, London generate 60% of their electricity through solar power.
