The scheme is managed by a new control room that heralds a shift of emphasis for CCTV schemes in the capital.
Westminster's £1.2m scheme, implemented by main contractor, Murphy Group and installed by sub-contractor, Atec, of Aldridge, Walsall, West Midlands, is the first phase of a system that has been designed to eventually cater for over 500 cameras.
Monitoring some of the most famous areas in central London, including, Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, Covent Garden and Soho, the hub of the Westminster wide surveillance scheme also monitors existing installations at Knightsbridge and Belgravia.
In the control room, three workstations, an operations room and the manager's office are fitted with Synectics' powerful Synergy ProTM control and integration software.
Overseeing the entire system, with the aid of customized maps, operators can display camera images onto a broadcast quality 100 inch back-projection screen, 20 CRT monitors, or flat screen 'spot' monitors.
Future proofed scheme
Touch-screen control is supplemented by 'Navigator' hardware joysticks for camera and monitor selection and P/T/Z control.
Camera switching is via a Synectics Tesseract SL 256 x 128 EXP matrix, designed for future proof expansion. A Synectics MatrixManager allows for the remote control of a ST 32x8 matrix sub-system and its associated cameras.
Control of the system's 31 JVC TK-1480 camera set-up menus is handled via SYN-JVC interface units. Further integration including two automatic gates, three existing barriers and a set of rising bollards to control vehicle access, are controlled from the Synergy ProTM touch-screen macros.
