The width of an entrance way to an underground car park and the close proximity of a road posed a challenge for auto-gate installers
Traffic flow into and out of an underground residential car park in Cobham, Surrey had to be strictly regulated.

The access road was single width and also unauthorised parking had to be prevented.

Working closely with FAAC (UK), security specialist Horsham Fencing formulated a solution using a link between the road level and basement level and traffic lights to control entry/exit.

At the road level entrance to the development they installed two FAAC 620 standard automated barriers controlled via a programmable logic controller that receives signals form the basement car park.

To get into the car park residents use radio trans-mitters and there is a digital intercom for guests.

Traffic lights are used for visual confirmation of the system's status and FAAC photobeams give directional indication.

(Horsham Fencing could not use groundloops because of the closeness of reinforced meshing in the concrete pad and a main road running within a few metres of the entrance.)

Underground at the entrance to the car park, Horsham Fencing used metal swing gates with FAAC 400 operators and photobeam.

Steve Mills of the fencing installers said: As is the case with most fully integrated systems of this nature, we had some site issues to deal with, but with FAAC's help we were able to install a safe working system that meets our client's needs".

Entrance level
At the entrance level, the FAAC 620 standard is an electro-hydraulic barrier that operates beam lengths of up to 5m. It has 70 per cent duty cycle and operating speeds of between 3-6 seconds. For heavy traffic flow rapid and super rapid versions are available. Models in the 620 series feature electronic controls that slow down the barrier before it stops (opening and closing).

Anti crush is provided by by-pass valves. Microprocessor and surface mount technology are standard.

Underground level
At the basement level, FAAC 400 operators control the metal with gates with a FAAC photobeam. Suitable for gates with a maximum width of 7m per leaf, the models in the 400 series can be set to handle light, industrial or heavy traffic flows. They have quiet operation, low maintenance requirements and low power consumption.
