However, using BSRIA's 1999 service and maintenance market valuation of £492.5 million, shows a 3·9% increase in business. After adjustment for the annual Retail Price Index (RPI) increase, shows a 1% increase in real terms.
The total value of product introduced was down 5·8% on 1999 at £82.8 million.
Overall primary installed systems business rose to £249 million, representing an increase of 2·2% on the 1999 level.
Within installed systems prices the overall added value of engineering, panels, peripherals, wiring and installation rose from 72·5% to 75%. This comprised corresponding rises from 76·9% to 80·3% on manufacturers' installations and from 67·6% to 69·6% on system specialists installations.
While sales to oems remained steady at £10.6 million, sales to distributors fell by 3·8% to £10 million.
In comparison to its 1991 levels, the total value of installed systems and product sales business has increased by 1·4% and profitability of the total market by 5·6%. Over the same period, the RPI has increased by 30·9% and the Construction Index by 20·4%.
It is apparent that after a period of increasing sales and market share for controls and bems manufacturers from 1991 to 1998, service and maintainance business is now migrating away from manufacturers towards systems specialists and other providers.
