Steve Biko Housing Association has launched an ambitious bid for independence after emerging from governance difficulties.
It is to appoint a director to pursue development bids and the acquisition of stock through transfers. It aims eventually to take back full management of its existing housing.

The association has 200 homes but was forced to hand them to fellow Liverpool housing association CDS in the 1990s amid wrangles with the Housing Corporation. Steve Biko was placed under supervision and the Housing Corporation put three appointees on the board. Steve Biko has now bought back all its stock, though CDS continues to manage the homes on its behalf.

Steve Biko chair Femi Sowande said of the association's move for independence: "It's no reflection on CDS.

"This is about our aspirations. We want more stock to achieve our objectives."
