The Rooflight Company has added to its sponsorship of the conservation element of the RIBA Awards. Its increased commitment, to £10,000 per year, has enabled the introduction of RIBA Conservation Awards this year.
In 2005, every conservation project that wins an RIBA Award will also receive an RIBA Conservation Award. Winners of RIBA Conservation Awards may be put forward for the Crown Estate Conservation Award.
The RIBA Conservation Awards are in addition to the Conservation Commendations which, through the Rooflight Company’s sponsorship, were introduced in 2004 to honour Regionally-shortlisted conservation projects within the RIBA Awards system.
Both the RIBA Conservation Awards and the Conservation Commendations were the idea of RIBA President George Ferguson. He said: ‘Thanks to the Rooflight Company’s ongoing support, conservation has been given its due prominence within the RIBA Awards.
Peter King, Chairman of the Rooflight Company who is also an RIBA member, said: ‘Although we now design and manufacture a wide range of steel rooflights, we built our success on the Conservation Rooflight. It is the window of choice of conservation architects, the National Trust and English Heritage. I saw the gap in the market while I was working as a conservation architect. This kind of practical, hands-on support for building conservation is what we really value in the development of the RIBA Conservation Awards and the Conservation Commendations.’
