The Government has given the go ahead for a Code for sustainable buildings to be produced. A drive to cut greenhouse gas emissions will form the heart of the Code. It will establish higher standards for energy and water efficiency, as well as waste and use of materials.
Nearly 50% of CO2 emissions in the UK are caused by constructing, maintaining and occupying buildings. The Code is being produced in response to a Sustainable Buildings Task Group report that pinpointed ways in which the industry and Government can jointly promote sustainable development.
The first outline of the Code is scheduled for completion in time for the Sustainable Communities Summit in January 2005. It is due for full publication in early 2006.
