Environment minister Michael Meacher has launched a lamp recycling scheme to help meet the forthcoming Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive.
The scheme will aim to boost recovery of gas discharge lamps at the end of their life. In 2000, 80 million of these lamps were sold, containing 0·5 tonnes of mercury and 12-13 tonnes of raw materials.

Accredited lamp recycling companies will be responsible for disassembling the old lamps to separate the mercury and recycle materials.

The initiative will be managed by SustainaLite, a not-for-profit company founded by the Lighting Industry Federation and the Environmental Services Association. Tel: 020 8675 5432.
