New Government initiatives aimed at policing the Internet will be ineffective without the full involvement of the private sector.
That's the message coming out of a comprehensive survey of UK IT professionals carried out by IT security specialist Indicii Salus.

Around 64% of those IT security specialists surveyed feel that Government must ally with the private sector to prevent the Internet from becoming a criminals' playground.

Private sector organisations sell and distribute cryptographic technology that allows consumers to transact safely online, and prevents third parties from reading their e-mails. In the wrong hands, though, the same technology is used by criminals to organise their activities online with complete privacy.

Without the support of the private sector, which generates and sells the 'keys' used to operate cryptographic technology, the Government is virtually powerless to crack its complex codes and intercept e-mails being sent by suspected criminals.

The survey also criticises the ways in which cryptographic technology is being sold.
