Security professionals and their members of staff have been warned to take far greater care of laptop computers, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and mobile telephones when on the move.
The warning, issued by The Taxi Newspaper, comes in the wake of a survey conducted in London which suggests that a staggering 2,900 laptops, 1,300 PDAs and 62,000 mobile telephones have been left in the capital's licensed taxis in the last six months alone.

Researcher The Gartner Group predicts that more than one billion hand-held computers and mobile 'phones with wireless network connectivity will be in use globally by 2003.

With more PDAs then ever before being used to access corporate networks, a given company's mobile workforce will become its weakest link unless security managers are extra-vigilant.

"Often, it's not the value of the device which is important," said Pointsec managing director Magnus Ahlberg, "but its content. Lost or stolen data may put your company at serious risk of sabotage, exploitation or damage to professional integrity."
