For those who currently hold either ACIBSE or MCIBSE membership but are not registered with the Engineering Council at IEng/CEng level, the Technical Report Route (TRR) will enable you to obtain professional registration without further academic studies.

CIBSE has operated the route for about a year and the take-up so far has been very encouraging.

The TRR is a very straightforward process. You identify a subject, which can be either a project or a research project in which you have been involved, and submit a synopsis outlining how you will demonstrate your knowledge of fundamental engineering principles in the final report. The synopsis is assessed by a panel of CIBSE members, all either practising or with experience of academia, and CIBSE will inform you of their decision and advise you how to proceed with the report.

The final report is assessed by two CIBSE interviewers and if it is approved, you will be interviewed on your report and your professional competence.

The time this route takes, from start to finish, will naturally depend on the time you can set aside to write your report, but normally candidates complete it between six and 18 months.

n If you or a colleague would be interested in attaining IEng or CEng registration through the TTR, please get in touch with Emma Jones, CIBSE professional development manager on ejones@cibse.org, or visit www.cibse.org where you will find guidance notes and example reports. A briefing session on the TRR will be held at CIBSE on 27 September - to reserve a place book online at www.cibse.org.
