Eight stations operated by franchise owner Thameslink that were among the first in the country to receive 'Secure Stations' status over two years ago have had that status renewed following thorough inspections by the British Transport Police (BTP).
Wimbledon Chase, South Merton, Mordern South, St Helier, Sutton Common, West Sutton, Haydons Road and Tooting are the stations involved this time around.

The 'Secure Stations' scheme is an opportunity for Britain's many and varied rail companies to improve security and help reduce crime. It accredits individual stations that have worked alongside the British Transport Police and other organisations.

There are four criteria against which each station is marked. First, the design of the station must conform to standards judged by the BTP to help prevent and reduce crime. Second, the management of the stations must enable steps being taken to prevent crime. Third, crime statistics for the 12 months prior to inspection must demonstrate the management of crime and, fourth, surveys must show that customers feel safe at any given station.
