In comparison to past attempts by Barry, particularly in the 1960s, to produce textbooks for the industry, this seventh edition is well written and illustrated.
The author demonstrates practical experience of on-site construction by answering questions before they are asked. The book is an ideal bible for students, who, whether budding architects or surveyors, will appreciate the detail of its explanations.
In the past, authors of construction textbooks have assumed that students have experience in interpreting drawings and other visuals; but while the same principles apply, an application can be reflected differently in design, and this can be confusing without explanation. The author sets minds at rest early by introducing easily recognisable expressions that are used repetitively.
In collating information, Barry has made one error, and it concerns the route to identifying damp and its effect in buildings. To state that dry rot occurs at a certain level because of moisture presence is misleading if other factors have not been taken into account. The study of damp is a science, and only trained and experienced persons should offer advice, because of the criticism that particular industry receives.
I was impressed with the referrals to building regulations that appear throughout the book. This saves the student time searching - usually with a fair amount of confusion - through approved documents. While the book acquaints students with approved documents, they must bear in mind that building regulations are continually being updated.
