Construction's last word on medal winners, Italian subcontractors, online fun and trend setting

World's strongest QS

Congratulations, with some gritted teeth, must be passed on to Australian WT Partnership staffer Damon Kelly, who last week struck silver at the Commonwealth Games.

Brisbane-based Damo, as he likes to be known, lifted a total of 396kg, yes that's 396, last week at the super-heavyweight weightlifting event in Melbourne, which is for men weighing over 105kg.

Damo is also currently studying for a QS degree at Queensland University of Technology and according to his firm "consuming considerable quantities of steak, breaking office chairs and avoiding caffeine". WT has now adopted the cheesy marketing blurb: ‘WT Partnership will lift the weight off your shoulders' off the back of his achievements. Let's face it, if you were a contractor down in Queensland would you argue with Damo? We think not.

Juventus makes it mark

A recent sneak preview around Arsenal's splendid new north London stadium offered some hope for our construction industry when compared to recent travails experienced a few miles east down the North Circular.

An organised calm surrounds the site and hopes are high for the project being handed over on time, if not ahead of it. There was also the usual cross section of nationalities working on the site, which appear to include Italians. Hence words scrawled on dusty windows of the stadium backing Juventus in this week's Champion's League quarter finals.

Game on

First there was Street Fighter, the game that let you punch, kick and generally throw around your mortal enemies with satisfying sounds of slapping and bodies hitting the deck.

Then came Grand Theft Auto Vice City, a game that takes you back to 1980s Miami, where you get to steal cars, open your own strip joint and gun down the police - all wearing a velour track suit and to a soundtrack ranging from Anthrax to Luther Vandross.

Now, we bring you the ultimate thrill - the product life cycle management game from 3D design software firm Dassault Systèmes. The online game allows you to simulate, design and optimise the life cycle of products. The best players will get into the PLM Hall of Fame. Test your skills at www.3ds.com/corporate/goodies Who said life cycle costing couldn't be fun?

Site style

Women in construction, are you sick of going on site in giant clown-style boots and outsized jackets whose sleeves dangle ignominiously around you knees? If so, sartorial salvation is at hand in the form of a company producing site clothes for women. Girlz at Work claims to make site clothes that are comfortable, reasonably priced and, most surprisingly of all, stylish. Check out this season's range of hard hats, site boots and overalls as at www.girlzatwork.co.uk

It’s Twickers old chap

There was no need for us to post any more pics of last week's site teaser on our website. Almost all of a host of readers correctly guessed that it was none other than the new south stand at Twickenham rugby ground.

The stadium was formally known as the fortress but given England's inability to win against anyone barring the Cayman Island seconds of late it has some way to go to return to past glories.

Perhaps this job's completion will coincide with a return to form. One reader thought the site was Wembley – presumably when the picture was taken the arch had fallen off at the same time as the beam did.

The winner of our inaugural contest, and the owner of a £20 Amazon token no less, is Mark Thomas from ChandlerKBS. His choice was purely a random one but we enjoyed his response – “Twickers old chap! South Stand development. Twenty Amazonian notes please. Thanks!” Happy to oblige Mark.
See next week’s edition for the next site to spot.
