Making the best of valuable talent is the Hawley Group's interim submission to Lord Sainsbury on ways in which the Engineering Council can become a more relevant and potent force.

The report proposes the route that the Engineering Council, the profession and the government should follow in order to maximise the value of engineering and technology skills in the 21 Century. It gives a snapshot into the current thought about engineering skills across the business community and society at large.

The report says that UK engineers are among the best in the world, but it warns that the profession is in need of overhaul. It found that neither engineers nor employers are satisfied with the current skills mix.

The Hawley Group has identified that the wider engineering community wants an organisation that will help give engineers entrepreneurial and business skills, exploit the web for keeping knowledge up-to-date and support business in matching skills to jobs.

The Engineering Council will be replaced by October 2001 by the Engineering and Technology Board.
