The Dodd Group has installed 500 Ei261 mains-powered carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to properties under the jurisdiction of Cannock Chase District Council.
The council was one of the first authorities in the UK to take seriously the threat of CO poisoning, and, a past initiative saw properties being fitted with battery-powered units.

However, finding that the battery-powered units were too vulnerable, the council has embarked on the installation of mains-powered models that are more robust, being able to stand up to vandalism, and which do not need the battery changing.

Supplied by Aico, the installation of these CO alarms is seen as a pioneering move for local authorities and the mains-powered versions look to be a success on this scheme. "We've installed mains powered units into the properties and removed battery-powered ones," says electrical maintenance officer Alan Dennison. "It's strange but tenants seem to have a lot more respect for a mains-powered unit. They don't seem to get vandalised."

The Council's aim is to have all properties with gas central heating or solid fuel appliances protected by a CO alarm within the next four years.
