Located on the South Bank of the River Thames, County Hall – former home of the Greater London Council – now plays host to several leisure and recreational developments including the popular London Aquarium, the Dali Universe exhibition, a Namco Station Pleasure Dome and several restaurants.
As one of the Capital's busiest tourist areas, fast and simple access to recorded CCTV images is essential for the on-site security team. Flexibility of coverage is equally vital.
With this in mind, when it came to upgrading the security installation, County Hall's security management team chose Digital Sprite multiplex recorders supplied by Dedicated Micros. Five Digital Sprites have been installed by Visual-Tech Installations alongside 75 new cameras to cover County Hall's two miles of corridors and leisure/retail space. In addition, a stand-alone Digital Sprite unit now manages the security cameras located above cash tills in the Aquarium.
Dean Hawkins of Visual-Tech takes up the story. "Digital Sprite enables security staff to operate from three remote keyboard locations in the Aquarium entrance, and from the Security Department's main office by way of fibre optic cables."
Hawkins added: "Though they're part of a separate installation, cameras covering the adjacent Marriott Hotel have also been integrated with County Hall's digital monitoring system."

It's the Mega Mall for Baxall
Leading CCTV player Baxall HAS had a range of its equipment installed in the Sharjah Mega Mall, an 800,000 square feet leisure development in the United Arab Emirates that's home to no less than 150 specialist retail outlets spread over three floors.
To ensure the safety of all visitors and employees within the Mall, an extensive surveillance system has just been installed by Promedia Systems. Taking centre stage are 76 of Baxall's CDSP9310 cameras, five ZMX Plus CT16M4 Triplex multiplexers, five DTL960E digital recorders and ten monitors – all controlled from a fully-functional ZKX2/J keyboard.
Images from the cameras are transmitted to the multiplexers in the dedicated central CCTV Control Room. From here, security officers can then select various multiple or single images from either live or recorded operational cameras.
Thanks to the Triplex function, the CT164M multiplexers offer the added capability of playback of previously-made recordings on the same monitor as the live display. This enables the monitoring officers to see what's happening as it's happening, while recording all cameras and reviewing all alarm events at the same time.

High fashion meets top security
When security professionals working for French fashion house Yves Saint Laurent specified near-invisible high security locks for its UK in-store display cabinets, it was Abloy Security's Eff Eff range that helped provide a solution.
Aside from being secure and easy to use, the locking system had to be hidden from view. Having been contacted by consultant Joan Batie Retail Design Management, installer Speed Alarms suggested Abloy's Eff Eff 1049.10 range of electro-mechanical locking units.
The locks provide end users with an array of possibilities, including central control of multiple units. Local control is also on offer by way of several devices (including switches and keypads).

PI Vision goes back to jail
As Federal Bureau and state Prisons in America strive to make their institutions modern establishments for both work and rehabilitation, there has never been a more critical time for the security in these prisons to be strengthened (thus enabling them to become safer environments for offenders and officers alike).
With this in mind, security professionals Stateside are borrowing from a system developed for the UK Home Office, and which is used in 98% of our own Category A prisons.
The 2nd Eyes Enterprise digital recording system developed by PI Vision offers high resolution images complete with full frame refresh as standard. In addition, RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) allows for instant access to recorded data without the delay often inherent in digital tape systems.
High integrity storage technology such as RAID Level 5 can retrieve and begin replaying recorded video virtually instantaneously – a vital consideration when reviewing incidents that have taken place at high security sites.

Integrated EAS keeps would-be thieves in check
State-of-the-art security equipment designed to integrate with high specification open-plan architecture has been installed at the new Harvey Nichols store that sprawls over five storeys in St Andrew's Square, Edinburgh.
Installed by ADT, the Floor-Max Plus EAS system is directly mounted on each level and works in conjunction with Sensormatic's Acousto-Magnetic security tags to protect individual items. An alarm is raised if thieves try to make off before any tags are de-activated.

Scottish Communication Systems: home by the sea
The existing CCTV system for Aberdeen Harbour has now been extended to cover other strategic areas of the famous old container port that handles no less than four million tonnes of cargo each year. Following the systems installation – carried out by Perth-based Scottish Communication Systems – all cameras in the harbour now link to a purpose-built Control Room with multi-screen viewing and digital recording capability.
The new installation also ensures that vehicular and pedestrian traffic is managed in and out of the harbour area through a PC-based access control system that controls all gates and barriers.

Photo-Scan and Karspace are working together on healthcare security
Swansea's Morriston Hospital and Bedford Hospital are being watched over by integrated security systems devised by CCTV specialist Photo-Scan Systems and Karspace Management Ltd (KML).
At both sites KML is responsible for the car parks, with Photo-Scan providing CCTV as part of a secure maintenance agreement.
The surveillance system installed at the Morriston Hospital comprises 12 external colour PTZ cameras for monitoring the car parks and entrance/exit points. KML staff monitor traffic on behalf of the NHS Trust from a central and dedicated CCTV Control Room fitted with four colour monitors.
For its part, Photo-Scan was given the unusual task of using the existing hospital telephone network as a data highway carrying camera pictures and video signals, but this has proven to be a successful communications option. In fact it has turned out to be an ideal solution, as the site is so extensive – with buildings spread everywhere – that there was little assistance for the designers in the provision of cable runs for data transmission and telemetry.
At the Bedford Hospital, the CCTV contract followed on from the installation of a perimeter CCTV system employing six external domes complete with colour cameras. Over 40 new Photo-Scan Systems' cameras have been added to monitor crucial areas including the A&E Department, vulnerable corridors and numerous exit/entry points.
