Industry bodies unite to set a challenging new agenda for the future of the building service sector.
Seventy-five of the building services industry's most influential and original thinkers are to come together in March 2003 for Think 2010. The event, organised by BSRIA, with the ECA, HVCA, CIBSE and FETA, will debate wide-ranging issues and set in place a 'new and radical agenda for the industry'.

The fruits of the brainstorming weekend conference will form the basis for a Declaration for change, a document that will be issued to each of the host organisations to inform their policies for the following seven years and beyond.

"Think 2010 is a real opportunity to create the business future that we desire for our industry," says BSRIA chief executive Andrew Eastwell. "If we are about to retreat to our trenches to weather the economic assaults that some doom mongers are suggesting are about to strike then it is a good time to design our own star wars missiles to build a more secure future."

Think 2010 will have four major objectives within which a range of topics will be discussed. The conference will:

  • act as neutral territory for the discussion of near and far term issues likely to affect the building services industry in 2010;
  • deliver a strategic direction on the key issues for the main building services institutions and trade associations;
  • give focus to industry and government on a new research agenda;
  • disseminate the findings of the workshop to industry and create buy-in to the actions that follow.

HVCA director Robert Higgs, says: "It is widely acknowledged that following the excellent work by Latham and Egan, we don't need anymore reports. What we need is action. It is therefore right that we look into the future in order to inform, refine and focus the actions that we must take. Think 2010 will determine our sector's agenda for change; for development and prosperity, perhaps even survival."

Ron Edmondson, chair of the Think 2010 organising committee, echoed Higg's veiled warning, stating: "Sustainability is the key to the survival of the building services industry, not just in terms of environmental performance and energy efficient buildings, but also in business effectiveness. Unless we make plans to improve our customer service, there may not be a UK building services industry in 2010."

Think 2010 will be staged over the weekend of 14-16 March 2003. Attendance will be by invitation.
