Seven major construction clients have taken shares in portal Asite. British Land, Legal & General, Prudential, Tishman Speyer, AXA, Morley Fund Management and St Modwen join property developers Stanhope and the Rotch Property Group as shareholders in the website.
Alistair Mellon, director of strategy and development at Asite, said it would be using the contractors and suppliers with which the clients work to create a catalogue of common building components. The components will be bought by main contractors through Asite.

"The Asite shareholders are providing staff and pilot projects so we can create a procurement catalogue," said Mellon. "We are also working with Microsoft and Commerce One to create a remote version of Asite, so contractors can order materials through an internet-enabled WAP phone or hand-held computer." Paul Webber, design director with real estate group Tishman Speyer in London, said that Asite fitted into its aims. "We feel very strongly that the industry needs to put its energies into improving efficiency in the supply chain, as Asite does. There is the potential to manage all our projects through Asite." Peter Rogers, construction director at Stanhope, said Asite was also open to investment from other sectors of the industry.

Last month Asite was launched to its partners.
