Well now you have a right to be, because the Plimsoll Envy Awards 2002 have 'named and acclaimed' 200 companies for their outstanding performance.

The 'Fastest Growing' sector was topped by Drayton Building Services, followed by Brown Brothers (Aberdeen) and Arthur McKay & Co (Electrical Contractors). This sector centred on market share gained. The average of the top 50 companies was 32·4%, compared to an industry average of just 8·3%.

The 'Most Profitable' category saw an average profit margin of 14%, with top players including N J Richards, ESBI Engineering (UK) and Alan Electrical. The average industry margin is only 2·8%, with 17% of companies making a loss.

Dudley Bower Group, Halsall Electrical and N V White topped the 'Leaders in Efficiency' category. Measured as the amount of sales per employee, top companies hit £167 000 per operative, doubling the average of £83 000.

Finally, 'Best Trading Partners' highlighted firms achieving a long-standing presence in the sector. N J Richards came top, with WR Group Holdings second and T Clarke in third place.
