A team of judges from the industry selected the 12 products on these pages from the many submitted to the organisers this year.
Products were awarded points for use of technology, value for money, star quality and the extent to which they met customer needs.
Six winners from this list and one overall winner will be announced at the Security Industry Awards 2002 dinner which takes place on the first night of IFSEC 2002.
The shortlisted companies and products are:
AcroSecure iDSS (Intelligent Digital Surveillance System).
This is an 'advanced user-friendly total security management solution' which helps administrators obtain real time remote surveillance and perform quick searches. It also helps them manage their recorded data, control cameras remotely, retrieve important digital video recorded system diagnostics and control up to 50 DVRs.
AcroSecure iDSS uses an intuitive graphical user interface and communicates with administrators over a local area network, ADSL or via the Intranet or Internet.
The company says the AcroSecure offers numerous benefits including: a lower cost of recording and total cost of ownership; reduced life cycle costs; virtual maintenance free operation; remote administration; easy to operate, expand and upgrade; easy to use management application software; modular design and 'extreme' accessibility.
Pyramid 2 Keyboard
The Pyramid 2 Keyboard is the user interface that operates the Pyramid matrix system and is designed for large CCTV applications such as town centres, stadia and airports.
It features soft keys, a three axis joystick for precision control of PTZ functions and a large, backlit VGA display which clearly shows the status and the menu options. It can fully control up to 144 cameras (fixed, PTZ and dome cameras with AC and DC control), up to 32 monitors and eight serially controlled devices such as multiplexers, VCRs and hard-disk recorders.
Baxall says the keyboard allows users to 'quickly and easily' manage the CCTV matrix switching system, ensuring the right camera image is on the specified monitor. It ensures the right camera(s) is being recorded on to a VCR or hard disk recorder and the right view is obtained via the PTZ functions.
GSM STU
The GSM STU provides a landline and back-up communication path to a premises, allowing alarms to be transmitted in the event of a landline communication failure.
The GSM signal strength is constantly monitored, allowing the monitoring of both landline and GSM. Failure of one will transmit an alarm via the other.
The product uses the existing RedCARE path for the majority of alarm signals. The GSM path which is polled every five minutes when in use is only used when the primary path is attacked.
GSM STU was launched following customer research and the new demands of the ACPO 2000 intruder alarms policy. It is suitable for all levels of risk from residential to very high security. Using the new Euro standards as a guide, it can be used at all four grades. A new pricing package based around the GSM STU allows the additional level of security for about £10 per month.
Small and easy to install for upgrading, the unit can be used as a 'stand alone' or 'plug-in'
Digital 4e
This is an Ethernet-ready entry-level digital multiplexer recorder that, for the first time, is said to bring all the benefits of CCTV networking within reach of small businesses.
The 'competitively priced' unit combines digital video multiplexing, digital recording and audio recording with network capability. It is designed to save time and hassle for both installer and end user. Installation is 'rapid' and is based on DM's trademark automatic set-up and camera detect features. A familiar front panel ensures the system is easy to use. With up to one month on-board digitally signed recordings to hard disk, it provides fast access to high quality digital recordings. Network access means that smaller businesses without a dedicated security guard can monitor images at any time from any place.
VNPR
This is described as 'the complete integrated solution for consistent, reliable numberplate capture'. The unit combines camera, optics, illumination and filter technology to provide clear images of number plates by night or day.
VNPR is said to overcome all problems related to vehicle speed, daytime headlights, reflective number plates, accurate focus during day/night and car headlights .
The company says, historically, car number plate systems have been restricted to high end security, but with increased computing power available widely, and more sophisticated software, the technology is becoming more widely available. Digital recorders and recent developments in CCD technology will also assist the expected growth in this market. Applications for VNPR include motorways, tollbooths, car parks, access control, hotels and gated communities.
There are no compatibility problems because VNPR is a fully integrated unit, and it saves the installer time and cost.
EIRIS Local Positioning Systems
This is an 'innovative and comprehensive' solution for managing and protecting valuable mobile assets. The system uses triple technology in one tag that constantly reports the status of the equipment allowing its positioning to be located and tracked if it is moved or the equipment is being used. It can instantaneously record an event for attack alarm, equipment removal, locating of equipment or personnel. It is suitable for any large organisation that uses vast amounts of high value mobile equipment such as hospitals, psychiatric institutions, retail stores or any high level secured environment.
It also answers data questions which help organisations control their assets and improve efficiency, such as: How many pieces of equipment do you have on record? How many of these are in use? Who is using them? How often are they used? Are you getting the most out of them? Why do you need to purchase more than you planned?
Freedom Security Display Stand
This product is a versatile protection system for items on open display in stores, museums etc.
At present high value goods such as china, glass, jewellery and expensive electronic products have to be kept behind glass or protected with unattractive wires. But the Freedom system alarms the goods at the point of display rather than at exit doors, thereby deterring snatch thieves. The protected area could be a plinth or it could be incorporated into a customised shop fitting display. It can be linked to a CCTV system or a store detective's pager. If the alarm sounder is disconnected it can also be used as a covert system for detecting internal theft. The tags are constantly monitored and the alarm sounds when they leave the protected field. Interference with the tags sets off the alarm. A version of Freedom has been produced specifically for perfume testers – a high loss area. When the customer picks up the tester an alert signal is given discreetly notifying the assistant of the customer's presence and becoming a sales aid.
Veritec P2 Detector
This detector, described as a "world first", was launched in response to the ACPO 2000 policy stating that police will respond only to confirmed alarms.
Providing sequential confirmation in a single housing, it combines two separate technologies, PIR and pressure wave sensor. It is wired with one standard alarm cable with each technology having independent relay outputs. When forced entry is detected into a sealed area, a pressure wave sensor is activated. This signal is followed by the passive infrared receiver which provides the second alarm and confirms an intrusion has taken place.
Maximum range is 15 metres. A confirmed signal can be sent to an ARC without the intruder having to enter other parts of the building, thus minimising further potential loss and damage.
Pyronix says Veritec P2 "offers the ultimate in false alarm immunity" and is suitable for domestic and commercial applications.
SSCCX13/18VP and SSC-MX13/18VCE video surveillance cameras
This range of high res cameras is designed to be easy to install and 'meet the demands of many installers for flexibility and quick installation' for a wide variety of applications. A one-box design is said to ensure speedy installation and a reduction in the costs associated with selecting a separate lens. The compact design is also ideal for installations where space is limited.
The high quality built-in varifocal lens is said to assist in a speedy set-up even for non-specialist installers with no need to fit and back-focus a separate lens. Just two adjustments need to be made (to focus and focal length to suit the field of view and distance from the scene being surveyed). Also helping the installer are mounting holes on both sides of the camera body allowing easy installation on a tripod bracket, either from above or below.
The design and colour scheme make them a suitable choice when aesthetics are important.
WebWay Secure 980
This is described as the most advanced and secure means of connecting security devices to an alarm receiving centre. If the ISDN line is disabled for any reason the WebWay will immediately send alarms to the main ARC using the GSM back-up mobile connection.
Specialist software has been included to provide secure connections to many of the industry's alarm panels, providing high speed transfer of configuration information to and from alarm management centres. The product has been designed to incorporate all the benefits of new technology and the emerging European standards.
Comments the company: "While the security industry has been using ISDN video surveillance for some time, the WebWay Secure combines the applications and technology to provide alarms, audio and video over ISDN, GSM, IP and X25 networks".
Introduction of BTEC Qualifications
Tavcom says that although, traditionally, courses have been accredited by leading industry bodies, there has been a lack of standardised vocational qualifications regulated by an authoritative and independent body which was 'universally acceptable to employers'.
The company says that Edexcel's BTEC Short Course Scheme represented the 'perfect vehicle' for them to introduce the regulated tuition. Edexcel accreditation was awarded to Tavcom and the company's BTEC courses were launchedearly in 2001.
The driving force behind the introduction of the courses was the company's realisation that calls for industry standards were becoming more frequent from Tavcom students and the company "realised it was better placed than other training companies to introduce the changes and use its influence to encourage others to follow its lead". BTEC Award qualifications have now been introduced on seven of the 26 courses in the training programme.
EnGuard ID
This is a production, management and verification system for secure identity documents used in border crossing, visa and employee identification schemes. Most current systems produce photo ID documents and rely on visual examination to verify that both the document is genuine and the person is correct.
EnGuard ID is said to bring "a new level of security" through the use of secure machine readable authentication of the document and fingerprint verification for confirming that the correct person is present.
The system offers either on-line or off-line verification through the use of the portable verification station. The identity can be proven from an office, PC or power source.
Low cost barcode storage media can be used, making it suitable for more demanding environments where funding is limited and smart cards would not be viable.
