The Conservative party wants to keep asylum seekers in secure centres, it announced on Tuesday.
Under its proposal for a “safer and fairer” system, applicants would be kept in the centres until security checks proved they were genuine.

Making the announcement, Opposition leader Iain Duncan Smith said the move would ensure that only those who posed no threat to the country stayed.

He added: “Vetting should be conducted quickly and effectively, and it must be compulsory.”

Shadow home secretary Oliver Letwin added that the party wanted a change in international law to let Britain alter the number of refugees it accepts.
