Trade associations are coming out in support of the HVCA campaign against the decision by the Council of Registered Gas Installers (Corgi) to introduce the mandatory registration of gas installations.
This has given rise to the formation of the Corgi Issues Group, with members including the HVCA, the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors, the Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineers and the Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers’ Federation.
The Group is pressing for the withdrawal or fundamental revision of the Corgi Complete Safety Initiative, which requires installers to register the installation of all gas appliances in residential premises from 1 April 2005. Installers will also have to pay a fee of up to £5 per installation.
HVCA spokesperson Jack McDavid stresses that the initiative will not drive out rogue traders, but simply place another financial and administrative burden on competent installers. He points out that a similar proposal has already been dismissed by the HSE as “unduly bureaucratic” during its fundamental review of gas safety.
