Trading places: Melanie Salvidge and her two children, Liam Jai and Megan, have traded in their flat on a rough estate in Sutton, Surrey, for a three- bedroom house in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire. The family moved up north as part of Sutton Council's Changing Places relocation scheme. The council has more than 1000 people on its housing register waiting for more suitable homes. It has been running the scheme since November 2001 and has relocated 11 households. Other London councils have also started relocating tenants to the Midlands and north of England in order to cope with their housing shortages. Islington has moved 15 families out of north London.
