Greater London Assembly chairman Trevor Phillips has been named the new head of the Commission for Racial Equality.
He replaces Gurbux Singh, who resigned last July after admitting to a public order offence in which he clashed with police.
The appointment sparked criticisms of cronyism from the Conservatives, who point out that Phillips is a former Labour candidate for deputy London mayor and a friend of disgraced former Cabinet minister Peter Mandelson.
Liberal Democrat shadow home secretary Simon Hughes warned that Phillips will have to put aside his own political feelings in his new job.
Phillips said he saw his role as leading the CRE in "rooting out racism and discrimination in all its forms" bringing diverse communities together.
