Tropus chosen to project manage the £180m Barnsley Markets development
The 1249 Regeneration Partnership has appointed Tropus to project manage its £180m Barnsley Markets development. The shopping, leisure and residential development project hopes to help transform Barnsley into a dynamic market town.
Graham Farrer, managing director of Tropus said: "We are delighted to be part of the team that will turn Barnsley's vision into reality and to deliver a high quality scheme that meets both the challenges of phasing and the aspirations of the architectural concept."
Designed by architects CZWG and Holder Mathias, the original concept was based on a kasbah (a traditional North African market) with an indoor market area on three interlinked levels and a covered external market area.
With a multi screen cinema, bowling centre, and a large amphitheatre, the external market will also act as an entertainment venue outside normal shopping hours. There are also plans for a 100 apartment residential complex and a new 1,200-space multi story car park.
Undertaken on a congested city centre site, the project involves the relocation, redevelopment and integration of Barnsley Markets into the town centre.
This is the largest single project within Barnsley's strategic development framework. Construction will begin in Spring 2008 and the team aim to have the project up and running by Spring 2011.
